But as well-written as the dialogue is, the system through which it’s deployed is even better. In stark contrast to Life Is Strange (which I loved!), it actually feels like real teenagers talking, too, which is hard to nail in any medium. Most games would cut a lot of Oxenfree's dialogue out for being irrelevant, but it’s vital to building the characters. Oxenfree boasts a bounty of well-written dialogue and lively voice acting that for once seems like it's coming from real people. Other than that, the gameplay’s pretty much just dialogue. You can also use the radio to listen to old-timey music, but like in Fallout 4, you’d be missing out on a rather terrific score (linked below). That mechanic - a radio which picks up frequencies from another dimension - isn’t as interesting as it could be, and actually gets frustrating and repetitive by the end of the game. Like its 2015 cousins, there’s also a unique gameplay mechanic that manipulates the game’s supernatural element. The island and its inhabitants are rendered in beautiful, moody 2.5D graphics, with elements like speech and thought bubbles lending interactions an almost Sims-y air. You’ll wander about the environment looking at and interacting with things, any backtracking leavened by scripted incident, as you work through the central supernatural mystery. Oxenfree blends concepts from last year’s Life Is Strange and Whispering Willows into a sidescrolling, dialogue-driven adventure game. Together with new stepbrother Jonas and friends Ren, Nona, and Clarissa, Alex explores Edwards Island, plunging facefirst into a truly bizarre supernatural nightmare.

People come here to fuck, we’re told, and aside from that the island is either painfully boring or full of mystery, depending on who you ask. You are Alex, a teenage girl on an excursion to Edwards Island, a tourist trap with shops and a beach and a disused military base.

Oxenfree is one of these unicorns, and while it’s not perfect, its speech system is a model for how to treat dialogue in video games. So games with genuinely naturalistic dialogue are the unicorns of the industry, and must be treasured. To some degree, it’s inherent to the medium - video game writers have to bring their work to an equilibrium with the requirement to tell the player what to do in gameplay. No matter the costs. The worst thing about most video games is the dialogue. Nothing like laying in bed, headphones on, being creeped out by forces who just want to live. The Nintendo Switch was the perfect system to play this game on. I feel a little ripped off by the way it all ends… but I also like endings that are not all neat and sorted out. I’m happy with the time I spent with Oxenfree. That is where I learned that dialogue choices are a huge key to this game. The same timeline? What is this? I was so confused and yet felt like I could kinda see the breadcrumbs the game had left me. The game reinforces this feeling of unease as the credits finish rolling and Oxenfree loops back to the main menu: Even after the credits rolled, I didn’t trust the game due to how much it had messed with me. But surprise! Your words do matter and do affect the outcome of the game.ĭo you want the super happy ending? The ending where whatever is happening actually ends? You have to pick the right grouping of dialogue choices.īy the end of the game, I doubted whether I had actually finished Oxenfree. Oxenfree is all about a constant flow of conversation that feels inconsequential. Endings based on specific dialogue choices you make. What I will spoil is that there are multiple endings to this game. I played this game without knowing much about it. You soon do not know where reality begins and the isolated island nightmare ends.

  • Environments that react to specific radio frequencies you tune in to with your radio…įriends start going missing.
  • A scientist who was researching radio frequencies….
  • A submarine crew who died off the island’s coast….
  • The evening soon goes to cosmic horror hell. And maybe also because tuning the radio to specific frequencies causes weird things to happen. They bring along a handheld radio, you know, just for fun. There was something magical about that soft glowing dial that brought music and voices from afar.Ī group of teenagers head to an island to party for the night. What I do remember though is the green glow of his Pioneer radio tuner. I think we broke his turntable first, but my memory is a tad fuzzy. Nice things that us kids always managed to break. I think he was used to nice things like his stereo system.
